Permits & process

What permits do I need for a bathroom remodel in California?

Most California bathroom remodels need a combination building permit covering plumbing, electrical, and mechanical work, plus a separate Title 24 energy compliance check. Cosmetic-only work (paint, fixture swap on existing rough-in) doesn't need a permit; anything moving water, electricity, or walls does.

Total permit cost lands at $450–$1,800 for typical bathroom remodels, more for additions. Cities like SF DBI charge percent-of-valuation; LA, San Jose, and most others use flat schedules by scope.

Inspection sequence: rough plumbing → rough electrical → mechanical → drywall → final. Plan 4–6 inspection days across the project.
